The Charlottetown Halliwell Consulting Abbies were overwhelmed with the support they received on Saturday night's benefit game for the families of Mitch MacLean and Tanner Craswell.
"The Abbies would like to thank everybody that showed up for their support," says team spokesperson, Cory Gaudet. "We raised just over $4,000. We would also like to thank Razzy's Road House, Island Flow, and Holland College for their door prize donations."
The score was more of a side note, but the Abbies and Holland College Junior Hurricanes skated to a 3-3 tie on Saturday night in front of a large crowd at the Simmons Sports Centre. The Abbies got off to a roaring start after goals by Anthony Cummiskey, Kory MacDougall, and Dan MacPhee earned them a 3-0 first-period lead. However, Hurricanes netminder, Sean Letourneau closed the door from then on and the Hurricanes replied with three of their own in the second period to knot the score. Letourneau and Abbies goaltender, Chris Chandler, had to make some big stops in the third period and in overtime to turn away any potential game-winning goal.
The teams and spectators took part in a moment of silence to pay their respects to MacLean and Craswell before the game. Abbies players showed their respect for their former teammate and friend by wearing red stickers on the back of their helmets labelled "MM #6" (representing Mitch MacLean's initials and jersey number).
