The first round of the 2011 Razzy's Junior C Hockey League Playoffs gets underway this weekend. The first round will be a best-of-five format with all eight teams in action.
On Friday night, the #6 North River Island Excavators Flames will travel at 8:30 to Pownal to face the #3 Red Devils. Pownal swept the season series 4-0 and are coming off their best regular season (20-8) since coming into the league and have done it with offence, having recorded an average of six goals per game. The Flames counter with some guys who've gone deep in the playoffs in recent years and will likely be a stern test.
On the same night, the #4 Morell Cover All Construction Crunch will open up their series with the South Side MacDonald's Excavation / EF MacPhee Construction Lynx at 8:20 in Morell. The Crunch won the season series 3-1, but lost the most recent meeting on January 2nd to the Lynx. The Crunch come in to this series as the highest-scoring team and having the leagues top three scorers on their roster. South Side started the season slow with six straight losses, but were 10-4 in the second half of the season.
On Saturday night at 8:10 at Simmons, the #7 Holland College Junior Hurricanes will play their first ever playoff game against their cross-town rivals, the #2 Charlottetown Halliwell Consulting Abbies. The Abbies won the season series 3-1 and had another solid season after making it to the Island Championship series last year. The Hurricanes struggled with injuries all year, but have shown that they are competitive with every team in the league when they are healthy.
The three-time defending champion #1 Tignish Perry's Construction Aces will receive a first-round bye, as the #8 Montague Sharks will be unable to finish the season due to a lack of available players.

The Island Champions will travel to Clare Nova Scotia for the Maritime Hockey North Junior C Championships April 6th - 10th. The tournament will be hosted on PEI in 2012.
