Expansion a Major Subject at Year-end Meeting
Posted By: JFDOUCET
Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Representatives from three potentially new franchises were at Tuesday night's year-end meeting and all sited a large crop of graduating midgets in their association as the main reason for icing a team in the 2010-11 campaign.

Belfast, Summerside, and Rustico each had a team in the league in the past, and are looking to get back in the mix.  Belfast has been out of the league since 2006, while Rustico and Summerside folded after the 2005 season.  The South Side MacDonald's Excavation / EF MacPhee Lynx and Charlottetown AG Electric Abbies had successful returns last season, but contrary to that, the Sherwood Falcons and Souris Mike's Boat Haulers were both forced to bow out and have not contacted the league about a return in 2010-11.  The league has had as many as 11 teams in a season in the past (2003-04).

Representatives of the Island Champion Tignish Perry's Construction Aces and Junior Council Chair, Cliff Affleck spoke at the meeting about how well the Aces represented their province on and off the ice at the Maritime - Hockey North Junior C Championships in Fredericton.  Clifford mentioned that he has attended several of these events over the years and that the calibre of hockey at this year's tournament is the highest he's seen.  The fact that the Aces were able to finish second in the round robin and come within a hair of advancing to the finals is evidence of the improved quality of play in the Razzy's Junior C League.

The league will not meet again until early September to begin planning for what looks to be a promising 2010-11 campaign.
