It was PEI's most impressive run at the Maritime - Hockey North Junior C Championships, but the Tignish Perry's Construction Aces came up just short of advancing to the finals. Kenzie Horne (1-1) scored early in the third to put the Aces up 3-2 on the Shediac Cap-Pele Predators, but Justin Dubroy (1-1) tied it midway through the final period and Luc Cormier (2-0) scored the winner with five minutes remaining to give the New Brunswick Champion Predators a 4-3 win and a birth in Sunday's final. They will face the Eastern Shore Junior Mariners, who doubled the Kivalliq Canucks of Nunavut 4-2 in the other semi-final.
Also scoring for the Predators was Michelle Donelle (1-2), while Julien Belliveau, Mark Richard, and Remi Leger picked up helpers.
For the PEI Champions, Spencer Phillips and Mike Adams had goals, while Colby Callaghan, Tyson Arsenault, Dillan Arsenault, and Nathan Brennan had assists.
The Predators outshot the Aces 35-29, with Martin Gallant earning the victory over Tignish's Mark Arsenault, who earlier in the day was selected as the goaltender on the tournament's all-star team at the awards banquet.
The tie for second place after the round robin is the highest an Island team has ever finished since the tournament began in 2003, and the 4-3 loss is the closest semi-final result. PEI is yet to advance to a championship game in this event.
Congratulations to the Aces for having such a strong performance and showcasing the increased level of hockey being played in PEI's league.
