09-10 Progress Report
Wednesday, November 25, 2009

The first month of the 2009-10 schedule is complete in the Razzy's Junior C Hockey league. The two expansion teams seem to have adapted well to the level of competition in this league and have been very successful in their first month back in the league. There have been lots of close games and tight races in the standings and in the scoring race early on, which sets up for an exciting winter and spring season of hockey.

The expansion Charlottetown AG Electric Abbies find themselves just one point out of top spot in the standings with a 6-2-1 record, including a 6-4 win against the Island Champion Tignish Perry's Construction Aces two weeks ago in Charlottetown. The South Side MacDonald's Excavators / EF MacPhee Construction Lynx sit in a tie for 4th spot with a solid 3-4-1-1 record and have proven to be a difficult team to get two points from.

The games have been closer this season, with 52% of the games decided by 2 goals or less, compared to only 41% last season. Stronger goaltending and team defence may be part of the reason, with the number of goals scored per game dropping to 8.4 this season from 10.2 in 2008-09. Fewer power play opportunities may be a contributing factor with the average penalty minutes per game dropping significantly to 49 from 62 last year (a 21% drop).

The Aces (7-2) and North River Island Excavators Flames (7-1) are on top of the standings once again and are stronger than ever, but are having more difficulty picking up wins as a result of stiffer competition from the rest of the pack. Mike Adams of the Aces and Chad Fleming of the Flames are tied atop a tight scoring race with 15 points each. The Pownal Red Devils are at 4-4 but have the top goaltender statistically, rookie Jordan Thibault, who boasts a .952 save percentage and 2.00 GAA through 5 games. The Red Devils are tied for the lead in team GAA which can make them very dangerous in the playoffs.

The Morell Flyers and Souris Mike's Boat Haulers find themselves at the bottom of the standings early on. The Flyers are struggling to find their scoring touch from last season, and the Boat Haulers have played well in most games, but have faced a difficult schedule in the early going, facing Tignish twice and North River three times already. Both teams will be looking to catch their stride in the coming weeks.
This Friday night, South Side visits Morell at 8:10, while Pownal hosts Charlottetown at 8:30.  Saturday night's lone game features Charlottetown in North River at 8:00 at APM Centre.  Six teams are in action on Sunday when Pownal visits Tignish at 6:30, Morell travels to Souris at 7:00, and North River takes on South Side in Borden also at 7:00.
