The Lynx, under the guidance of head coach Paul Dawson and assistants Daniel MacKenzie and Marshall Thomas, blanked the Belfast Sabres 3-0 on Friday night to win the best-of-seven series 4-2. "It's certainly something we've been looking forward to," said Lynx manager Steve Watts in a phone interview on Saturday morning. "We've made it to the finals the last two years against Tignish, but just weren't able to finish it off. "When we hit the ice last fall I thought we had a pretty good team, strong coaching and everybody seemed to mesh well together. We had a few hiccups along the way, but it ended up with a championship." Miller recorded all four wins in the championship series, including two shutouts. "You don't hear that too often in championship hockey," said Watts. "The rest of our team came to play, and Belfast gave us a good battle." Offensively, Brady VanderVelden scored twice and set up another for a three-point night, and team captain Colton Dawson had a goal and an assist. Cody Miller assisted on all three tallies and Ivan MacPhee added a single helper The Crapaud-based Lynx will now represent P.E.I. at the Maritime-Hockey North Junior C championships at UPEI next week. "Everybody is pretty excited about that and looking forward to it," said Watts. "Hopefully, we will be able to represent the Island well." Southside finished the regular season in first place at 21-5-2 (won-lost-overtime losses), and went 7-2 in the playoffs. |
