The new season of the Razzy's Junior C Hockey League gets underway on Friday night when the defending champion, Tignish Perry's Construction Aces host the Belfast Down East Auto Parts Sabres at 7:30 in Tignish.
The Aces have won six of the last seven league championships and have to be considered the team to beat. Their opponents, the Sabres, have been eliminated in the playoffs the past two seasons by the Aces and will be looking to get off to a good start against their rivals.
On Saturday night, the Sabres travel to Crapaud, to take on the South Side MacDonald's Excavation / EF MacPhee Lynx for a 7:40 game. The Lynx have been runners-up to the Aces the last two seasons and will be looking to take the next step in the 2014-15 season.
Also on Saturday night at 7:50 at the APM Centre, the North River Island Excavators Flames open up their season at home against the Souris Hawks. "The Flames look for leadership from veterans Cameron MacMurdo, Curtis Gant, Jeremy MacAulay and Logan LeClair to move up in the standings," says manager, David McQuaid. "Newcomers Matt Craig, Ben Landry, Zach Wight and Tyson Blue look to provide a spark. Ryan MacGuigan and Brady McQuaid are being counted upon to spark the offence for new coach, Taylor Doyle."
Tignish will make the long trip to Souris for a 7:00 start on Sunday night against the Hawks. The Hawks are looking to carry their momentum from a successful first season back in the league in 2013-14 that ended with a strong playoff push. Community support in Souris grew as the season went on and is expected to continue.
The first week wraps up with the Flames visiting the Sherwood Falcons at 8:35 on Monday night at Cody Banks Arena. "We expect to have a much better team than last year with 12 returning players," says manager, Robert Maddix. "Returning players such as Brady Sinnott will add scoring power and Alex Hughes, Zac Mella and Zachary Gould will bring team leadership. We've added strength up front with Zack MacDonald and Cody Arsenault. We're looking forward to hosting the Maritime-Hockey North Junior C Championships in March at MacLauchlan Arena."
All six teams will advance to the playoffs, with the top two seeds receiving a first-round bye after the 28-game regular season.
The league champion will join the host Falcons at the Maritime-Hockey North Junior C Championships, March 25th to 29th in Charlottetown.
