It's been almost two years since the Aces have suffered a regular season loss, and as a result they find themselves leading the pack again in the early stages of the 2008-09 schedule. Their last regular season defeat was a 6-3 loss to the North River Flames on January 31, 2007. The Flames have stormed out of the gate again this year and sit second in the standings, while the Morell Flyers have shown that they intend to improve on their last place finish from a year ago with a strong 3-2-1 start to sit in third place in the early going. The power-play has strongly contributed, currently running at a league best 22%. The expansion Boathaulers picked up their first win last weekend, a 6-4 comeback victory in which they scored 5 unanswered goals to erase a 4-1 deficit to Pownal.
Jamie Kelly of Morell has the early points lead with 15 points in 6 games. He lead the Flyers with 59 points (27G 32A) in 27 games last season. Jamie has at least 2 points in every game he's played so far this season.
Kevin MacKay of North River is the league's top goaltender so far statistically with a 2.00 GAA and a .893 save percentage. He is also unbeaten with a 3-0-1 record in 4 games.
With fighting majors on the rise in the early stages of the year, teams have been warned that the harshness of suspensions will increase as the season continues to help maintain the integrity of the league. Players with instigator penalties and repeat offenses will be dealt longer suspensions then they have in the first few weeks of the season.
There are 6 games on tap for the weekend with each team playing twice. The weekend gets started on Friday night with Souris visiting Pownal for the second half of their home-and-home and Tignish visiting Morell.
