The new season of the Razzy's Junior C Hockey League gets underway on Friday night when the Morell Cover All Construction Crunch visit the Pownal Red Devils at 8:30 in Pownal. The Crunch are returning with a new bench boss in Kenny MacDonald. They will look to last year's league leading goal scorer, Mitchell Ryan to lead them offensively. Defensively they will be led by veteran Bruce Jay and second year player Dan MacDonald along with the returning goaltending tandem of Travis Crane and Brady McKenna.
After notching twenty wins last year, a club high, the Red Devils look to take the next step in contending for the league title. They will depend on their veteran leaders, Daniel Donahoe, Aaron Young, Kris McGuirk, all who will be returning for their last year. The team ranked second in the league in scoring last year and with the new additions of Aaron Fitzpatrick, Patrick Callaghan, and Jack Panting, should position the team with the same scoring punch. All eight teams will be in action on Saturday night with the expansion Tyne Valley Clover Farmers seeing their first action against the Holland College Junior Hurricanes at the Civic Centre at 7:05. Tyne Valley General Manager, Adam MacLennan says, "Evan Ballum, Brad Bryan, Mitchell Phillips, and Josh Coughlin are some players to watch for this year as they should lead the team throughout the season." The Junior Hurricanes return for their second season in the league with higher expectations. With a new coaching staff and added talent to their roster, they set their sights on being a contender this season. Returning players like goaltender Sean Letourneau, defensemen Mitch Doiron and Owen Wilson and right winger Zach Bennett look to build on solid rookie seasons along with new additions, defencemen Robert Mercer, Stephen Gould, and forwards Jonathon Power, Allan Burton, Ryan Trowsdale and David Wamback. In a rematch of last season's Island Championship series, the Charlottetown Halliwell Consulting Abbies will begin their defense of the league title against the Tignish Perry’s Construction Aces at 8:10 at the Simmons Arena. "With 14 returning players from last year's championship team we are looking to again contend for the league title." Says Head Coach, Cory Gaudet. "We have two great goaltenders (Chris Chandler and Taylor Doyle) and six solid defensemen who can jump in on the rush as well as four solid lines up front that can score and play physical." Aces coach, Brian Hogan, says "with 12 returning players we think we can be very competitive again this season. We feel we have strong goaltending, good defense and the addition of a few promising rookies should enable us to score and compete with any team". The Aces are guaranteed a birth in the 2012 Maritime - Hockey North Junior C Championships as the host team in April. The Red Devils will travel to APM Centre for a 7:50 start against playoff rivals from last season, the North River Island Excavators Flames. The Flames will be led by veteran forwards Glen Gorveatte, Keir Campbell, Morgan McLellan, Andrew O'Shea, Brennan Dalziel with newcomers Jonathan Hammill, Kaven Theriault, Cameron MacMurdo and others adding spark. The defence will be anchored by veterans Jon Clark, Mitch LeClair and Drew McInnis. The South Side MacDonald's Excavation / EF MacPhee Construction Lynx will round out Saturday's schedule with a home matchup against the Crunch at 7:40 in Crapaud. Mitchell DesRoches and Tyler LaPierre are looking after the bench duties this season, and are counting on the Lynx' returning veterans and new player additions to provide area fans with good solid hockey entertainment on Saturday nights. The week wraps up with three more games on Sunday when the Lynx visit the Hurricanes at 3:05 at the Civic Centre, the Aces host the Flames at 6:30 in Tignish, and the Clover Farmers welcome the Abbies at 7:00 in Tyne Valley. |
