The new season of the Razzy's Junior C Hockey League gets underway on Friday night on two fronts. The defending champion, Tignish Perry's Construction Aces open up against the expansion Belfast Surge Energy Sabres on Friday night at 8 o'clock in Tignish. The Aces are starting off this season with almost half of the roster being new and eager players. The coaches expect solid things at the blue line from defenseman Kirk Ramsay. At center ice, Spencer Gallant will be a role model, and the team's ace-in-the-whole will be goaltender Jake Hackett. The Sabres will be a new team, but will have several players from last year's runners up, the Pownal Red Devils, who've taken a year leave of absence from the league. Also on Friday night at 8 o'clock, the Tyne Valley Clover Farmers will welcome the North River Island Excavators Flames at the Tyne Valley Community Sports Centre. "We're a more well-balanced team coming into this season," says manager, Adam MacLennan. "We feel that we have all four lines available for scoring and shutting down other teams' top lines. We are expecting a big year out of our captain Cody Arsenault, JC Dawson, and Tyler Peters."
The Flames have only six players returning from last season, including speedsters Brennan Dalziel and Keir Campbell. They've added five players from the former Charlottetown Abbies team, including Taylor Doyle in goal. Other new faces include Dakota Vessey, formerly with the Cornwall Midget Thunder, Max MacDonald of the Kings County Midget AAA team and Bo Ford of the Pownal Midget AAA team. Terry Squires and Roger Vessey return as coaches for another season.
On Saturday night, the Morell Cover All Construction Crunch will visit the South Side MacDonald’s Excavation / EF MacPhee Construction Lynx at 7:40 in Crapaud. "The Lynx are looking forward to the season with many returning players from the 2011 season," states manager, Steve Watts. "Bench bosses Mitchell DesRoches and Tyler LaPierre are excited to see how this years' version of the Lynx will stack up against the other five teams in the league. Home games are Saturday nights at the South Shore Actiplex, starting at 7:40." Also on Saturday, to round out a light opening-week schedule, the Aces will travel to APM Centre to face the Flames at 7:50. All six teams will advance to the playoffs, with the top two seeds receiving first-round byes after the 28-game regular season. New this year, the league will have shootouts to break regular season ties and will have an All-Star Game in January with a unique format in which a league alumni team will challenge a team of 2012-13 Razzy's Junior C All-Stars. More details will follow shortly. |
